This is a pretty straight forward song imploring folks to not join the military. I know it can be tempting, I grew up in small towns and witnessed that temptation and watched it consume friends and people I knew. It's unfortunate because the military really gives meager benefits to veterans, so it's a bullshit scheme; it's akin to selling your sould for sure, as trite as that may sound, because you're giving up on certain principles of your life for an unrealised promise. And whether that promise is money or the diluted notion that you're providing a service for your family and friend in keeping them safe is really of no consquence. I hope that most people aren't innately murderous psychopaths, but perhaps I'm too optimistic. Our foreig policy breeds the conditions that cause so called "terrorism", we are an antagonistic country. Last year the USA alone spent 41% of ALL the military spending in the world, that's to appropriate resources and subjugate peoples NOT to preserve your freedom. It's solely for the preservation of fat-cats, not for your college tuition. How hypocritical can you be to invade and uproot whole communities of people while saying it's somehow vicariously protecting Joe and Jane Somebody back in the midwest of the USA, it's fucking absurd. In the end I have to admit that I'm not fully a proponent of the idea of a "poverty draft" because that would imply mandatory service for people of a certain economic teir, and that's not the case. People make the descision to join themselves. Perhaps they're pressured by society, their communities, their friends, family, and church - which is unfortunate and I can ampathize with, sure - but in the end YOU make that choice, and I won't support you or any other troops, period.
lyrics
What's the price we pay?
Well I'll tell ya', it's personal freedom
That is the right to choose and defend who we are
Now it's shattered in peices, lying on the ground
Now guts fall out your ass, how could you just laugh
You didn't defend a nation, you just raided and sacked
So as you're dying now, was it worth it
To patrol the world and gain no knowledge?
NO!
That's fucking absurd
Military preys on fear and promotes a campaign based on hate
Using "God and Country" to foment false conciousness ideals
This seems common knowledge yet people insist upon joining, why?
Engrained in the fervor of Nationalistic zeal?
Or a poverty draft?
It's a knee jerk reaction
Now goose step and get ready to kill
With sick satisfaction
You're not even human!
Gave up on your life and free will
Killing for liars!
